BIS301 gave me my first real understanding of exactly what this major entails. At first, I was confused at how a class would
function when so many students would be studying so many different concentrations. After completing BIS301, I had a profound
understanding of what interdisciplinary studies mean. I felt comfortable and confident in my major, and was assured that
I had made the right choice. What I took most from BIS301 was learning exactly what BIS meant to me: the combination and
integration of two or more areas of study or interest, with the intent of reaching a greater understanding of each one. I
learned that BIS values individuality, blending of ideas, experiential education and hands-on learning.
BIS302 is more specifically a research-based class designed to help students further integrate their two areas of study
while enhancing their skills in research and critical analysis. This course helped me understand just how many aspects of
the real world my two concentrations could touch on. I explored social phenomenons that related to my concentrations and
learned to suggest various solutions to alleviate the problems by using interdisciplinarian means.
BIS401 gives students the chance to take their concentrations and apply them in real life situations. This class requires
an applied study, whether it be through internship, volunteer work, or other hands-on experience. This class gave me the
opportunity to take what I have learned in the last four years and begin trying to figure out what I wanted to do with that
knowledge. After interning with ABC15: Sonoran Living Live, I was able to utilize my communication skills and theatre experience
to learn more about the world of broadcasting and television. This class has given me insight on the different career paths
that I would like to pursue after college.
BIS402 is a senior seminar class with various topics and subject matters. For me, this class has not only been an exploration
of academic interests, but more importantly, and exploration of self. The various exercises, self-assessments, papers, and
projects I have done in this class have given me a greater understanding of the person I am and the person I would like to
become. I have learned more about myself in this class than I have in years of living my life. This class has helped me
on a more personal, emotional, and spiritual level, which will in turn affect all other aspects of my life (both academically
and professionally speaking).
